A double stroller is the only way to move two small children on foot, and the choice between side-by-side and tandem decides whether you fit through your own front door. This guide covers the trade.
The two layouts
- Side-by-side seats two next to each other. Both children get the same ride and view, but the width is the problem: measure your doors, hallways, and elevator before buying.
- Tandem (front and back) stacks the seats. It fits through narrow spaces but is longer, heavier at the back, and the rear child gets less view and sometimes less legroom.
What to check
- Width vs your world. A side-by-side is often 28 to 32 inches wide. Standard doorways are about 30 inches, so a half-inch decides your daily life.
- Recline for both. If one child naps while the other sits up, both seats need independent recline.
- Weight and fold. Doubles are heavy; check the folded size if it lives in a trunk.

Age gap changes the answer
