Short answer: The checks that apply to every stroller: harness, brakes, tip-over, heat, and recall lookups. A two-minute routine before every walk.

Most stroller injuries are not crashes. They are tip-overs, falls from an unbuckled seat, and burns from a hot frame left in the sun. This guide is the two-minute routine that applies to every stroller, every walk.
Before you walk
- Buckle the five-point harness. Every time, even for a short trip. A child standing in a moving stroller is the most common fall.
- Check the brakes. Engage and release on flat ground; a sticky brake fails when you need it on a slope.
- Test the fold lock. A stroller that folds on its own traps fingers and drops the child.
Tip-over is the big one
A stroller tips backward when weight hangs on the handles. Never hang a heavy diaper bag on the back; use the basket under the seat instead. A loaded handle combined with a raised curb is the classic tip.
Heat and burns
Metal and dark fabric in direct sun get hot enough to burn skin in minutes. Touch the frame, straps, and buckle before seating the child, and never leave a child in a parked stroller in the sun.
Recalls
Before buying used and once a year after, look the model up. In the United States check CPSC recalls; in the EU check Safety Gate. A stroller with an open recall is not safe at any price.
Age-stage checks
A newborn needs the harness tight and a flat recline, per the [newborn guide](/guides/best/stroller-newborn-picks). A toddler needs the same harness and a watchful eye near stairs and escalators, where strollers and children part company.
