Short answer: Grass, gravel, and cobbles need bigger wheels and suspension. What makes a stroller handle rough paths, and when a jogger is the better tool.

A stroller that glides on a mall floor fights you on a park trail. If your routes leave the pavement, wheel size and suspension decide your sanity. This guide covers what an all-terrain stroller is, and where it stops.
The two features that matter
- Wheel size. Around 8 inches or larger rolls over grass and gravel; 4 to 6 inch wheels dig in.
- Suspension. At the frame or wheel, it keeps the child from a shaking and you from fighting the push.
What to expect
An all-terrain stroller is heavier and wider than a city stroller, and it folds bigger. That is the price of the wheels. If you only leave pavement once a month, a full-size with decent wheels, covered in the [umbrella vs full-size guide](/guides/special/stroller-umbrella-vs-full), may be enough.
When a jogger is better
If your rough paths are also where you run, a [jogging stroller](/guides/scenario/stroller-jogging-guide) with a fixed front wheel and air tires beats a wanderer. The jogger trades everyday ease for true off-path control.
Tires
Air tires grip and absorb but can puncture; foam tires never flatten but transmit bumps. For mixed use, air tires on the big wheels are the comfortable choice if you accept the odd pump.
Safety on rough ground
Brakes matter more off pavement, where a stroller can roll. Use them on any slope and keep the harness tight. The [stroller safety guide](/guides/risk/stroller-safety-tips) lists the checks that apply everywhere.
