44 CPSC recall notices on children's bicycles since 2000, against 2 on balance bikes. Hazard breakdown, year-by-year trend and what to search before you buy.
How many children's bikes get recalled, and what goes wrong
Between 2000 and 2026 the US CPSC published 44 recall notices on children's bicycles. That is more than 22x the 2 notices on balance bikes. For a category where a child is strapped to the frame, the recall record is worth reading before you buy.
US CPSC data only. Recalls outside the US are published by other authorities and are not in this count.
Where children's bikes sit in the feed
The same 8335 CPSC notices the site pulls every build are split by what they cover. These are the counts, so you can see whether a category is genuinely risky or merely well indexed:
| Product category in the feed | Notices |
|---|---|
| Children's bicycles and bicycle-related children's products | 44 |
| Children's bicycle helmets | 59 |
| Balance bikes | 2 |
| All notices retrieved from the CPSC feed | 8335 |

What to do before you buy
The feed is public and searchable. Four things worth doing:
- ●Search the model. CPSC recall search covers the model number, the brand and the retailer. Searching the brand alone catches re-badges of the same product under different names.
- ●Check the date on the notice, not just the fact of it. A 2014 recall on a model still in production is a different question from one that has been superseded by a newer design.
- ●Read the remedy. Refund, repair, replacement and 'no remedy offered' are different outcomes, and the last one is not a reason to skip the model — but it does mean nobody is paying for a fault.
- ●Look for the model number on the frame, not the box. Recalls identify the product, and the number is usually stamped or printed on the frame or fork.
What this record cannot tell you
Three limits before you rely on it:
This is US data. The EU publishes its own alerts through Safety Gate and other markets have their own registers; a bike sold elsewhere will not appear here.
Recall data measures what was reported, not what was dangerous. A well-marketed product can be safer than a quiet one and still show up more often simply because more units were sold.
A model with no notice is not proven safe — only untested by this record. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
Where these counts come from
- Source: the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's SaferProducts.gov recall API, queried for 2000–2026 and read on 2026-10-13.
- Scope: the 8335 notices returned by that query. Each notice is classified into children's bicycle, children's helmet, or balance bike by matching the product title and category text against patterns recorded in the generator.
- Counts are of notices, not of units. A single notice can cover a run of hundreds of thousands of bikes, and a model can appear in more than one notice over time.
- Re-run with `npm run data:recalls`. Nothing on this page is typed in by hand.
