Short answer: A powered scooter is a different machine with a minimum age and speed rules. Why we publish only kick scooters, and what to check if you buy electric.

A kick scooter and a powered scooter share a name and a deck, but they are different machines with different rules. This guide explains the divide and why this site's scooter comparisons stay on kick models.
What a kick scooter is
Human-powered: the child kicks to move and brakes with a foot or hand. No battery, no speed beyond what legs make, no minimum-age ambiguity beyond balance. Every scooter published here is a kick scooter, so the [3 vs 2 wheel guide](/guides/beginner/kids-scooter-3-vs-2-wheel) and the [best 4 year old pick](/guides/best/kids-scooter-best-4-year) stay on things we can verify from the listing.
What an electric scooter adds
A motor, a battery, and a top speed. That changes the safety math: a child on a powered scooter can outrun their braking skill and their supervision. Most regions set a minimum age and a speed class, and helmets stop being optional in practice.
Why we do not publish electric
We will not review a product whose key numbers — top speed, motor output, battery behavior — we cannot verify from a listing, and whose safety depends on rules that vary by region. The [helmet and pad guide](/guides/risk/kids-scooter-helmet-pads) still applies, and applies harder.
If you buy electric anyway
Take the minimum age, top speed, and brake type from the manufacturer directly, not from a review. Insist on a helmet rated for the speed, supervise every ride, and keep it off public roads until local rules allow. A kick scooter remains the safer first machine for balance and judgment.
