Short answer: A parent remote lets you steer and stop a car the child cannot yet control. What to check: range, override behavior, and speed lockout.

A parental remote is the feature that turns a ride-on from a lawn toy into something you can supervise. This guide covers what a good remote does and what to check before you rely on it.
What the remote actually does
A remote lets the parent drive, brake, and override the child's controls. On a fast car it is the difference between a fun ride and an incident heading toward the street. It also lets a younger child enjoy a bigger car before they can steer it themselves.
Range and reliability
Check the remote's rated range and, more importantly, whether it stays connected at the edges of the yard. A remote that drops out exactly when you need it is worse than none. Look for a rated range that comfortably exceeds your yard.
Override, not coexistence
The remote must override the child's controls, not compete with them. When the parent takes over, the child's joystick should do nothing until the parent hands control back. Test that this is unambiguous on the listing's spec or in person.
Speed lockout
The best remotes include a low-speed mode that caps the car regardless of what the child does. On a [12V car for a 3 year old](/guides/scenario/kids-ride-on-best-3-year) this is what makes a faster car appropriate; on a [24V truck](/guides/best/kids-ride-on-best-24v-2-seater) it is close to mandatory.
Still required
A remote is supervision, not a substitute for it. The [weight limit](/guides/risk/kids-ride-on-weight-limit) and [battery care](/guides/maintenance/kids-ride-on-battery-care) still apply, and an adult should always be watching, not just holding a remote.
