Short answer: A child's bike is ridden hard and stored worse. The chain and tire care that keep it safe and rolling: lube, pressure, and the pre-ride check.

Kids Bike Chain Tire Care

Children's bikes take more abuse than they get care. This guide covers the small, regular habits that keep a kid's bike safe and rolling — and the two-minute check before every ride.

The chain

A dry, rusty chain is stiff and can skip or snap. Every few weeks: wipe it with a rag, apply a drop of bicycle chain lube to each roller, spin the pedals, and wipe off the excess. A clean, lightly lubed chain lasts longer and shifts (or coasts) smoothly. If the bike has [gears](/guides/best/kids-bike-best-20-inch), the same routine keeps the derailleur happy.

Tire pressure

Soft tires are hard to pedal and easy to pinch-flat. Check pressure with a gauge or a thumb; the sidewall lists the range. Inflate to the low end for a smoother ride on rough ground, the high end for paved speed. A tire that bulges under the child's weight is under-inflated.

The pre-ride check

Before each ride, squeeze both tires, spin the wheels to check for rub, and confirm the brakes bite. Thirty seconds prevents most roadside stops. This matters more as the child gets faster and rides farther from home.

Brakes and bolts

Hand brakes need pad clearance; coaster brakes need the chain taut. Periodically check that the seat and handlebar clamps are tight — children grow, and clamps loosen. The [coaster vs hand brake guide](/guides/special/kids-bike-coaster-vs-hand-brake) covers the two brake types if you are unsure what you are looking at.

Storage

A bike left outside rusts. Store it dry and upright; a damp, lying-flat bike corrodes the chain and seizes the bearings within a season.
