Short answer: Coaster brakes are simple and need no hand strength; hand brakes teach the habit every later bike uses. What each gives up, by rider age and bike size.

Coaster vs Hand Brake Kids

Two brake types dominate children's bikes, and they feel nothing alike. This guide covers what each does, what it costs in later habits, and which to pick by age and bike size.

Coaster brake (pedal backward)

A coaster brake stops the rear wheel when the child pedals backward. It needs no hand strength and is intuitive for a new rider. The downside: it locks the pedals, so the child cannot coast with feet up, and it teaches no skill they will use on an adult bike. Common on smaller bikes — see the [16 inch guide](/guides/best/kids-bike-best-16-inch).

Hand brake (lever)

A hand brake stops with a lever at the grip and is what every bike past childhood uses. On a small, reach-adjustable lever it is learnable by age five or six. The downside: it needs hand strength and a little coordination, and cheap levers can be stiff. Standard from [20 inch up](/guides/best/kids-bike-best-20-inch).

What each gives up

  • Coaster: no coasting, no transferable skill, rear-wheel-only stop (less powerful).
  • Hand: needs stronger hands, more to learn, but teaches the lifelong habit and can brake both wheels.

Which to choose

  • Small first bike (12-16 inch): a coaster, or both, is fine and low-stress.
  • 20 inch and up: prioritize a good hand brake; a coaster at this size is a missed chance to learn.
  • Nervous or very young rider: coaster first, hand brake learned alongside.

Fit the brake to the hand

Whatever you choose, confirm the child can pull the lever to the bar (hand) or pedal back firmly (coaster). A brake they cannot use is no brake. A [helmet](/guides/risk/kids-bike-helmet-fit) is required either way.
