Short answer: The fastest way off training wheels is to lower the seat and pull the pedals. A calm path from balance to pedaling, with a helmet on the whole time.

Teach a Kid to Ride a Bike

The old method — hold the seat and run — works, but the calmer path is to teach balance before pedaling. This guide covers a step-by-step approach most children master in a session or two, and what to do about training wheels if they are already on.

Lower the seat first

Drop the seat so the child can put both feet flat on the ground while seated. Flat feet are what let them balance without fear. This single change fixes most "I can't" moments.

Step 1: walk, then glide

With pedals on or off, have the child walk the bike, then lift feet and glide short distances. They learn that balance comes from moving, not from you holding on. A [balance bike](/guides/special/kids-bike-balance-vs-training-wheels) has already taught this; a pedal bike can do the same with the pedals removed for a day.

Step 2: add pedaling last

Once they glide confidently, put the pedals back and have them start with one push, then pedal. Keep the seat low so they can still touch down. Within a session or two, raise the seat to the proper height from the [size chart](/guides/beginner/kids-bike-size-chart).

If training wheels are already on

Loosen them so they barely touch, then remove one, then both, over a few rides. Each step forces a little more balance. The [balance vs training wheels guide](/guides/special/kids-bike-balance-vs-training-wheels) explains why this is worth the short wobble.

Keep it short and calm

Ten minutes of success beats an hour of frustration. Stop while they are winning. The [helmet](/guides/risk/kids-bike-helmet-fit) stays on the entire time, and a flat, open space away from traffic is the only place to start.
